Made to Move

Before my work in therapy, I owned and operated a health and fitness studio for 13 years. As I worked with clients to improve their health and physical condition, it became increasingly clear to me that, at the most basic human level, we are created for two fundamental things: movement and connection.

This fundamental premise eventually led me to the field of mental health. Extensive research indicates that bilateral stimulation (movement) can play a crucial role in healing the brain and nervous system. Bilateral stimulation promotes physiological changes in the brain that allow for the processing and integration of memories, emotions, and incidents that may be stuck in the nervous system. Whether you are dealing with trauma, addiction, anxiety, or depression, movement can be a powerful tool for healing and growth.

The Benefits of Movement

On a physical level, movement has been shown to help clients restore bone and joint function, increase overall strength, enhance flexibility, improve cardiovascular and respiratory health, boost the immune system, enhance quality of sleep, and accelerate the recovery process. Furthermore, regular movement can contribute to a reduction in chronic pain and prevent unwanted weight gain.

The Role of Connection

From a physiological perspective, movement can help clients deepen their connection with themselves. Engaging in physical activity triggers the release of endorphins and serotonin in the brain, leading to a reduction in stress levels and the alleviation of symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions. Movement can also help decrease addictive cravings, enhance feelings of control, improve coping mechanisms, and foster a stronger sense of self-esteem.

Feeling Known, Validated, and Empowered

Throughout my experience training clients in movement, I have witnessed firsthand how individuals begin to establish a deeper connection with themselves. By incorporating movement practices that promote self-awareness, muscle activation, and breath regulation, I have helped clients tap into their strengths and replace negative internal dialogue with positive thought patterns. Additionally, I have utilized simple imagery to draw parallels between our training sessions and the challenges clients face in their everyday lives, fostering a holistic approach to growth and self-discovery.

Empowerment Through Movement

My ultimate goal has been to empower my clients not only to succeed in their workouts but also to equip them with adaptable skills to navigate personal challenges. By stepping back and allowing clients room for self-discovery, growth, and success, I have found that true transformation occurs. Yes, physical transformations such as weight loss and increased strength are significant, but the real gains come from the increased self-awareness, improved mental health, and enhanced emotional well-being experienced by my clients.

Creating Lasting Change

The ripple effect of movement extends beyond physical improvements, influencing mental and emotional well-being as well. As clients embrace movement as a tool for personal growth, they often find that positive changes in one area of their life spill over into others, creating a more integrated and balanced approach to health and wellness.
